Welcome

It's Time for New Leadership on the Board of Education

High quality public school education is something we all want for the children of Hawaii. Sadly, our current education system is failing to meet this goal. In an all too familiar scenario, we seem to be working harder yet getting further and further away from providing our children an education that will allow them to compete in tomorrow’s global environment.

Students are working harder to cover more material; their parents (many working two jobs) are working harder to support them. Teachers are being asked to work longer hours; many even buy some of their own materials, while principals are being asked to “multi task” within a system heavy with red tape and shifting federal standards. With so many people working so hard to improve Hawaii’s public schools why are we getting so little traction?

I believe that answer is a lack of leadership. The Board of Education - responsible for setting educational policy and standards for Hawaii – needs to do a better job.

We need a Board of Education that will provide both vision and leadership.  We need a Board of Education that will work with the Department of Education to support the efforts of students, teachers and administrators and advocate for the needs of those groups before the Legislature to guarantee that we don't "over promise yet under fund" them.  Most of all, we need a Board of Education that is committed first and foremost to education, not simply to using the office as a stepping stone to further personal political ambitions.
